Refuse Recycling FAQ

Why Wasn't My Container Emptied?

Your automated containers may not be collected for these reasons.

What if I can't fit all my yard trimmings in the green 100-gallon container?

If you do not regularly have extra yard trimmings, store the excess in your old yard trimmings containers and place them out in the green automated container the following week. Better yet, try leaving your grass clippings on your lawn, which is called grasscycling, or using a free City compost bin.

What if I need one or more additional green containers?

If you find that you regularly have more than 100 gallons of yard trimmings, please give us your name, address, and phone number and we will provide the container(s) requested.

Is there a charge for additional green or recycling containers?

There is no charge for obtaining or servicing extra green or recycling containers. (See above)

Can I place my recycling container out every week?

While you are allowed to place your recycling and yard trimmings containers out every week on collection day, we ask that you only place them out when full to reduce the cost of collection.

What can I place in the gray recycling container?

The types of accepted paper and plastic include: (1) all clean paper, including junk mail, cardboard, magazines, envelopes (windows are OK), ledger paper, and cereal boxes with liners removed, and (2) all number 1 (PET) and 2 (HDPE) plastic bottles. We accept all aluminum and steel cans, all glass bottles and jars, newspaper and phone books. Please flatten cardboard and cereal boxes. As a reminder, we do not accept aluminum foil, scrap metal, window or safety glass, mirrors, light bulbs, drinking glasses, plastic bags, plastic wrap, food waste, packaging materials, TV dinner trays and margarine tubs.

What can I place in the green yard trimmings container?

Place all brush, leaves, grass, trimmings, and tree limbs less than 6 inches in diameter. Do not place palm fronds or palm tree parts, fruit or vegetables, plastic or paper bags, tree limbs greater than 6 inches in diameter, animal waste and dirt. Do not bundle or tie yard trimmings and make sure the lid of the container is closed.

Can I save money by using a smaller 64-gallon refuse container?

Yes. Single-family residences are eligible for lower refuse rates if they use a 64-gallon instead of a 100-gallon refuse container. To see the current amount of this recycling incentive, see the current chart of refuse fees. There are also incentive rates for 2-4 unit residences if a duplex needs only one 64-gallon refuse container, a triplex needs only one 100-gallon refuse container, or a fourplex needs only one 100-gallon and one 64 gallon refuse container. Give us your name address, and phone number and we will arrange to exchange your containers.

What if I need smaller recycling or yard trimming containers?

The 100-gallon automated containers, at 28.5 inches wide, were designed to fit through gates. We have a limited number of slightly smaller 64-gallon gray and green containers, with a similar footprint, but shorter. If you want one of these, give us your name, address, and phone number and we will try to provide the requested smaller containers.

Is participation required in either the recycling or yard trimmings collection programs?

Participation is voluntary.

What if I live in a two to four unit complex?

We ask that you share in the use of one recycling and one yard trimmings container. Our policy is to not place additional containers solely so that each 2-4 unit residence can have their own containers. You can request additional containers by providing us with your name, address, and phone number and a supervisor will call you after determining whether to deliver additional containers.

How should I place the containers out for collection?

As with your refuse container, place the three containers in the street at the curb if there are parked cars or other obstacles that may reduce access by the collection truck. Otherwise, they can be placed on top of the curb. There should be one foot between each container and the containers should be three feet from any obstruction such as cars, trees, fences, mail boxes, etc.
